What is topping?

Topping is not random damage. It is controlled removal of the main growing tip to redirect structure and create more dominant tops.

Topping means cutting off the main top of the plant above a node so the side branches below it take over.

In plain language, you are breaking apical dominance so the plant stops putting all its energy into one main leader.

Why it matters: instead of one tall central top, you get a wider structure with multiple strong tops that can fill your canopy better.

This is controlled structure training. You cut with purpose, not because hacking the plant looks cool.

I

Break apical dominance

Removing the main top forces side branches to compete and take over as new leaders.

II

Create more tops

Topping helps build a wider canopy with more productive main growth points.

III

Timing controls recovery

Do it too early or on a weak plant and recovery slows down. Good timing keeps growth strong.

IV

Clean cuts matter

A sharp clean cut reduces unnecessary damage and gives the plant a smoother recovery.

What you need

Healthy growth. Clean scissors. Good timing.

🌿

Healthy plant

Only top a plant that is actively growing and strong enough to recover fast.

✂️

Clean scissors

Use sharp clean tools so the cut is fast, clean, and not ragged.

📍

Node awareness

You need to know exactly where to cut so the correct side branches take over.

⏱️

Good timing

Topping works best when the plant has enough nodes and enough momentum to bounce back.

🌱

Growth patience

After topping, give the plant time to redirect energy and form new dominant tops.
